I spent this weekend morning in bed, as comfortable as possible, watching American television — enabled by a birthday gift from my wife: a Slingbox HD, which allows me to stream my home cable box over the internet from anywhere in the world. It’s striking how far technology has advanced, not only in improving broadcast quality but in making location largely irrelevant for accessing familiar content.

Back in the U.S., mornings like this usually come with a sense of procrastination — time that could be spent more productively at home. Here, the dynamic is different. With fewer obligations outside of work, I have to make a conscious effort to get up, get dressed, and leave the hotel — even if it’s just to walk to a nearby tavern for lunch after skipping breakfast.

Dining has been a mixed experience. I’ve found myself skipping meals in anticipation of trying new restaurants, but many fall short. Buffet-style service is common, often prioritizing quantity over quality. It has reinforced how strong the culinary standard is in the U.S., where variety and execution are consistently high. I expect I’ll return with a greater appreciation for that.

Last night, a colleague invited me to a pool party on Yas Island, home to the Formula 1 circuit — one of the landmarks I was most interested in visiting. At its center sits the Yas Hotel, a distinctive structure wrapped in an LED mesh facade that is particularly impressive at night. The surrounding area, with its cafes and restaurants, was worth exploring, even if briefly.

The event itself was not especially compelling — loud music and a crowd that skewed toward excess rather than atmosphere. Still, after spending most of the day in my hotel room, it was an opportunity to get out. The weather, notably, is beginning to improve as the months progress. One unexpected highlight: the NBA Jam Fest was also being held on Yas Island that weekend, which gave me the chance to get a photo with the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy.

We arrived early in the evening and learned the event would end within a few hours — far earlier than similar gatherings I’ve experienced elsewhere. Rather than stay, we left for my colleague’s apartment near Al Wahda Mall, where I also picked up a few essentials. His accommodations, arranged for a longer-term assignment, are notably more substantial than a standard hotel setup — well-appointed, spacious, and with a strong view of the city. It was a contrast I noticed when returning to my own room later that night.

I’m heading to an Italian restaurant this evening with a few colleagues. It will be another opportunity to reassess the local dining experience.
